Cache and Ashes
Overview
Cache and Ashes is a first-person exploration game about death, grief, and digital legacy.
I was inspired to make this game after losing the man who raised me.
An early prototype was exhibited at the Black Lines of Code Exhibition (which was supported by the Sims) at Copeland Gallery, London.
About
The prototype currently features two environments: a stylised church with warm, contemplative lighting and an ethereal night garden under moonlight.
Players explore in first-person, encountering a priest in the church who offers spiritual perspectives on death, and a funeral director in the garden who discusses contemporary mourning practices and digital legacy.
The experience invites players to move between these sacred spaces at their own pace, engaging in conversations about grief, memory, and what remains of us after death.
Process
I plan to develop this game further as time permits.
Next steps, for example is exploring how to power NPCs with AI.
It is something that I had avoided to due to a short development window and a sensitive topic.
